Pain Reprocessing Therapy

If you have been struggling with chronic pain for months or even years, it is possible that it is neuroplastic pain which can be treatable using pain reprocessing therapy.  In fact, approximately 80% of all chronic pain is attributed to neuroplastic pain.

What is neuroplastic pain you might ask?  It's basically the brain misinterpreting messages from the body as if they were dangerous thus creating a false alarm.  The nerve signals are intensified to create a pain feeling in the body.  It is important to get an accurate diagnosis to clarify if the pain is truly structural or neuroplastic.  A list of common symptoms associated with neuroplastic pain can be found here.

* “As long as the X-rays and MRIs do not show a tumor, infection, inflammatory condition, or fracture, and if the neurological examination is normal to rule out nerve damage, then: the presence of degenerative discs, spurs, facet problems, and bulging discs should not be interpreted to be causing pain.” (citation: Howard Schubiner, MD)

Indicators of neuroplastic pain:

The following are indicators that can help determine if your pain is neuroplastic in nature:

  • Your pain is unpredictable; It comes and goes without rhyme or reason.  For example it might decrease to a 2 out of 10 in intensity but other times increase to an 8 out of 10 when performing the same or similar activity indicating neuroplastic pain.  Usually structural pain is consistent and doesn't vary greatly.
  • Your pain moves around to different areas of your body
  • The onset of pain was during a stressful time in your life
  • It's symmetrical - happening to both sides of your body
  • The onset of pain was without injury.  However, even if there was a true injury, say for example, you slipped and fractured your wrist.  It started with an appropriate pain reaction that kept lingering after the healing time period and turned into neuroplastic pain.
  • Your personality tends towards perfectionism/anxiousness/hypervigilence/frustration

A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder evaluated how effective Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is with chronic pain clients.  Fifty were given PRT.  Of the fifty back pain sufferers who were treated with PRT, 98% reported improvement and 66% reported to be pain-free or nearly pain-free post-treatment. You can read more about the study here.  This study supports the effectiveness of PRT for chronic pain.
